Lao Tzu, surnamed Li, name Ear, word Dan, is the great thinker, philosopher, writer and historian of the ancient Chinese. He is the founder and representative of the Taoism and the Taoist School. Later, he was regarded as the ancestor of Taoism, the Very High Lord. Hangu Pass was built by the State of Qin during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period. The plateau lies in the west of the Pass and the precipitous cliffs lies in the east, the south is connected with the Qin Mountains and the north is surrounded by the Yellow River. The Stare of Qin successfully defended against the attacks by the Six-Power Allied Forces. It is one of the earliest built fortresses. The Hangu Pass is not only a military stronghold, but also the key of cultural and economic exchanges between Central Plains hinterland and Northwest China. It is said that when Lao Tzu headed to the west, as he was going through the Hangu Pass, the Governor Yin Xi earnestly requesting Lao Tzu to leave his thought achievements to the later generations before he returned home and retired, so he wrote “Tao Te Ching”. The “Tao Te Ching” plays an important role in Taoism and can be called the doctrine. Nowadays, the sales volume of “Tao Te Ching” has surpassed that of the Bible in the West, above other classics. According to the statistic data from UNESCO, among the classics of different countries, “Tao Te Ching” is a classic that has been translated into the most languages and has the largest circulation.
